It’s a common assumption that therapy is mostly about talking things through, understanding your thoughts, and changing unhelpful patterns of thinking. But for many people, especially those carrying chronic stress, trauma or long-term anxiety, insight alone isn’t enough to create change.

Polyvagal theory offers a different starting point. It suggests our nervous system is constantly, often unconsciously, scanning for safety or threat, and that this state directly shapes how we think, feel and behave. When the nervous system is stuck in fight, flight or shutdown, it becomes very difficult to access calm, clear thinking, no matter how much insight a person has.

This is why regulation often needs to come before insight. Helping the body feel genuinely safe, through breath, movement, connection or simply a consistent, attuned therapeutic relationship, creates the groundwork for real change to actually take hold.
